While on this diet I have developed a wholly enhanced sense of taste. For a food writer, that’s saying a lot. I thought my palate was sensitive and somewhat talented before. Now it’s down-right fine-tuned.
My husband was always the one who could decipher what mystery ingredient was in a dish. That was not a talent I possessed. I was, I thought, fairly good, but he was better. He could identify a bit of oregano when I just knew it was Italian. I could taste a wine and know there was lemon, or pineapple or even hints of vanilla. I could tell if a red wine had tannins, plum overtones or even some earthly elements. I thought I was pretty good.
Now, I can tell the nuances in apples. That’s news for me.
I’ve never been a big fan of apples. I preferred bananas. They were portable and peelable. I could eat the middle and toss the rest. When it came to apples, watermelon or even oranges, if it squirted juice that got on my face or left me with a sugary “smile” I was not happy. That aversion started as a child at backyard gatherings. When they fed us kids a piece of watermelon it didn’t come with a wet rag. We were expected to eat and enjoy and then go play. I hated having a sticky face and fingers. Big yuk. So after that I didn’t want to bite into an apple either. I hated peeling oranges because they squirted and I had to work around the pith. I had no tolerance for pith, so an orange was a project. I’d rather eat mandarin oranges from a can. I probably sound like a finicky kid and I was never labeled that. I just wanted to eat food that didn’t involve me getting sticky. It wasn’t just fruit. You can add barbecued ribs to that list too. This particular trait has carried on into adulthood.
With this diet, an apple for dessert has become a mainstay. I can slice it up. I can sprinkle stevia on it, then some cinnamon or better yet, pumpkin pie spice and I feel like I’m almost eating apple pie. My newest discovery is to sprinkle on some vanilla powder that I bought once at a specialty store. Vanilla apples are a real treat.
I was a Granny Smith eater until recently. Growing up, we ate Red Delicious. I decided years ago that I didn’t like the Red Delicious skin. My “boyfriend” at the time (who later became my husband), turned me on to Granny Smith apples and I was hooked. I baked and cooked with them for decades. With the advent of the diet I have expanded my horizons. I’ve tried some Galas. Love the color. Not hooked on the apple. I’d rather decorate with them. Golden Delicious is a wonder. I love that one because it has a very delicate skin. The skin chews well and doesn’t end up stuck in my teeth. Love that. A mild apple. And my newest favorite is Honeycrisp. It’s the crunch that got me. I bit into that thing and went slightly deaf for a second. The crunch was loud. And juicy! I was standing in the grocery store at a taste-testing table and even though the juice ran down my chin, I was still happy! I bought a bag of those darlings on the spot. I could taste the difference, too.
I know the apple experts out there are laughing right now. The variety of tastes in apples has been known long before I went on this diet. Why else would grocery stores stock so many? I’ve always wondered that very thing. I wonder less now.
Cheers,

Smash Burgers
ZReboot,Featured Posts,ZSpecialties,Recipes,ZS-5 Ingredients or Less
Smash burgers are all the rage. Step into a brew pub and you’ll likely find a smash burger on the food menu. These are NOT the huge, 8oz burgers we’ve been fed in the past. These are a thinner burger…

Why We Go On A Diet
In a recent survey, we asked dieters the biggest reason they decided to go on a diet and chose Plan Z. The most popular answer was, “I could not stand the pain any longer.”

Wait till you try the Braeburns the JAZZ and the FUJI ……man you have been missing out….could do a wine and apple tasting party!!
Oh, yeah, Fuji’s are awesome and in Z3, there is nothing better than a Honeycrisp with almond butter!
I agree with the improvement in taste of everything I eat. I thought I was just hungary, and that was why everything tastes wonderful. I now eat slowly and try to savor every bite. I am on z reduction, 15 lbs down.
Apples have always been my favorite fruit and I always cut them into wedges before I eat them, I just feel more lady-like eating them that way. I love the Honeycrisp as well, but I also love Gala, Braeburn, and Fuji’s are a favorite. I live in WA State so apples are always in abundance here. When I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter I craved Granny Smith apples and ate 2 or 3 of them a day (unfortunately with my son I craved red licorice). Now I rarely eat a Granny Smith, I basically use them for cooking as they cook up so well. ZReduction, and am down 12.4 pounds. Thank you Sarah,
New Zealand Braeburns are the best, followed by Washington Braeburns. Of course Fujis and galas are good too! ZReduction down 14.6
APPLE? with peanut butter or cheese YES It has been fun getting to know what apple really tastes like and my apple pie spice with stevia on them has even my husband eating them and he does not like many fruits Thanks for the help
I love apples and am thrilled they are on the plan! Best apple yet-Envy-try them!
I have lost 21 lbs. so far I have not wanted to brag, because I have done that many times before. I think losing weight is like a second job and I now have signed up for the promotion.
If you like a super hard and crunchy apple the Arkansas Black is as hard as a baseball! They are hard to fine, but worth the crunch when you can. Talk about taste changing, I can now taste how bitter some coffees can be and have had to switch to gourmet ones!!
I really like Gala apples with cinnamon, don’t even need anything else on them.
So far I have lost 14 lbs. It is pretty slow, but faster than before, I imagine it would be better if my thyroid worked right. I am on pills, but have not been the same since.
I hear ya Joan! I am hypo thyroid & am on pills too & have never been the same since & that is when I REALLY started gaining weight! LOVE to slice honey crisp apples with my mandolin on the thinnest & just munch on them plain!! Today is day 21 on deduct & I am down 12.8!!! I am a happy camper 🙂
If you like the Jazz, try the Pink Lady Apples. They are hard to find… which makes them all the more pleasurable.
I love Pink Lady apples too! You can find them at the Aldi’s stores. The Pink Lady apple is a hard, crisp, apple that has a luscious flavor! Lori
My basic apples for a long time have been Gala and Yellow Delicious– both very reliable. Honeycrisp when I can get them…. and my newest great discovery is Fuji– definitely five yums!!!
You have to try giant washington red apples I have tried every apple mentioned and these are the juiciest. Not to tart not too sweet nice skin. Its my new favorite
Galas for snacking and Granny Smith for baking are my two most favorites, but I’ve always loved apples. Never cared too much for Red Delicious and don’t even know why people consider them delicious. They are flavorless and mealy-mushy. Yuck. I’m on day 30 of ZReduction. I’ve only lost 13.6 pounds out of the 50 I want to lose. It’s beginning to look like I won’t even take off 10% of my weight on ZReduction now. It’s going to be hard to start eating more food, because of the fear my weight will go right back up on the ZReboot.
I love Ambrosia apples. They are hard to find but they are great!! Other wise I love Honeycrisp apples. Very good with the stevia and cinnamon. Started diet on April 21 and so far have lost 15 pounds and a lot more to go:). Wish me luck:)
My favorite are Pink Lady – I love the Sweatleaf sugar and Pumpkin Pie Spice. I cut it up every morning and eat throughout the day, what a treat. Day 32 and down 15 – I’m very happy with that. Not as strict as I should be, but I’m learning to eat better and actually like it.
HoneyCrisp my favorite!! Day 32 down 14 pounds !! Happy with that . Little ways to go yet.
On ZReduction, Day 32 and down 25 lbs… apples are awesome and I have tried some new ones. Honeycrisp, Ambrosia, Pink Lady are all wonderful! I have never been sooooo happy to have found a diet in my life! However I don’t think of it as a “diet” but a lifestyle change and change my life it has!!!
I was never a apple eater, but when I did it was either red delicious our granny smith and I couldn’t eat them at room temperature, I had to have them cold. Now I don’t eat those kind anymore, I’m enjoying the pink lady apples and I can eat them ate room temperature. Yum yum
Zola- regarding the golden delicious….I too love them and have gone a step further: I have a golden delicious tree and each fall I harvest the best and make them into dried apples in a drier I constructed. I peel, core and slice them; brief soak in salt water and then dry. Takes about 20 hours…give them to my kids and grand kids at Christmas time. VERY TASTY.
can taste my golden apples again noy since I was a kid did they taste so good0
feel so good these days thank you for all your support.
Thank you Linda – so glad to hear you’re doing so well 🙂
An apple a day, keeps my Dr. away.
The New Cosmic Crisp apple is the best apple to hit the market, trust me!
Sounds delicious 🙂 I’ll keep an eye out for them in the grocery store!
Don
I heard about these on a radio show a few months ago. I have not seen them in the store yet but I am on the lookout!
My new find similar to my favorite Gala is Hunnyz. So so good now my favorite
